Summary
A special case of a carcinoid syndrome is reported which differed from the regular type of this syndrome in two respects: 1. The overproduction of serotonin was due to a malignant carcinoma rather than to an ordinary carcinoid tumor. 2. The case was complicated by additional symptoms which would rather fit the Verner-Morrison syndrome. Considering the pertinent literature an attempt is made to differentiate between the symptomatology of the present type and that of the regular type of the carcinoid syndrome. Furthermore, the problems posed by the recognition and interpretation of the various symptoms resulting from the apparent coincidence of a Verner-Morrison syndrome with a carcinoid syndrome are discussed.
