Summary
1. Out of 6000 patients whose CSF was analysed for total protein (TP) at the Neurologic University Clinic Basle during 1966–1971, 119 cases could be used for calculating “normal ranges”. Special attention was paid to the choice of standard substances and to the accuracy of the protein determination. On account of Kjeldahlometric controls of all standards applied, a new normal range of180–410 mg/l TP resulted for lumbar CSF.
2. Differences between the sexes could not be proved.
3. A slight increase in TP with age must be accepted, but it can be neglected in practical daily routine.
4. A comparison with former investigations at our clinic in the years 1958–1961 and 1962–1965 shows progressively increasing mean values of about 18% per decade, possibly due to changing habits and environmental factors. Special consideration is given to the age distribution in order to exclude its influence.
5. Differences between our findings and those of other authors concerning sex influence and absolute amount of TP still could not be explained.
Zusammenfassung
