Relativistic theory forK-shell ionisation by fast electrons

Abstract

The first-order Born approximation is applied for the calculation of the triply differential cross section for electron ejection from heavy target atoms. For the impinging electron, Coulomb waves as well as plane waves are used, and the exchange interaction is correctly accounted for. Two examples are considered,e +Ag ande +Ta. While for Ag, reasonable agreement with the experimental spectra is obtained with plane waves, the much heavier Ta target requires the use of Coulomb waves for the continuum electronic states.
