Abstract
The structure of the collective potential-energy-surface is discussed. By use of its rotational invariance it is possible to determine the surface explicitly without the necessity of calculating all points in thea 0-a 2-plane microscopically. The contributions of three essential parts, namely the single particle-stiffness, the pairing-interaction and the Coulomb-force, are thoroughly investigated. The surface is compared with experimental data in the rare earth region and yields important results for the structure of the collective vibrations in these nuclei.
