Abstract

From about 6×106 stoppingK -meson reactions in the Saclay 80 cm hydrogen bubble chamber 70Σ →Λe¯ν and 11Σ+→Λe+ν decays have been identified. The ratio of the vector to axial vector coupling constant has been determined,f 1/g 1=−0.22±0.28, consistent with the predictionf 1=0 of the CVC-theory. The branching ratios for the two decay modes are,Γ(Σ →Λeν)/Γ(Σ→ all modes)=(0.69±0.12). 10−4,Γ+→Λe+ν)/Γ(Σ+→ all modes)=(0.29±0.10). 10−4. The ratio, Γ(Σ+→Λe+)/Γ(Σ→Λev)=0.69±0.18, agrees with the phase space ratio, 0.61, therefore a theory that includes no second class currents is consistent with the data.

We wish to acknowledge the services of the CERN-Saclay bubble chamber crew in maintaining the fine operation conditions of the chamber. The ratio of stoppingK -mesons to background tracks depends very much on the manner in which the circulating PS-beam strikes the target. We wish to thank the PS crew for their excellent performance in this regard. We appreciate very much the efforts of our scanners who had to work under difficult conditions scanning photographs with a high number ofK-meson tracks. We are grateful to P.Lazeyras, P.Lexa, A.Minten, D.Plane, F.Wittgenstein and their collaborators for designing theK -beam. Without its excellent performance this experiment would not have been possible. We are indebted to H.Schleich for his invaluable assistance during the exposure of the film. We wish to thank Professors R.Armenteros, B. P.Gregory and Ch.Peyrou for their continuous support during the experiment.
