Abstract
The development of the Erlangen source for polarized protons and deuterons is described1–3. Strong magnetic fields with quadrupole and sextupole symmetry for separation of spin states of atomic beams were investigated. Quadrupoles give better separation (higher polarization), sextupoles give higher total beam flux.
In a first arrangement of the apparatus with quadrupole magnets a polarized proton current of 5·10−8 A at the exit of the weak field ionizer was achieved. The polarization degree was estimated by indirect methods to be more than 45%. In a second arrangement with a sextupole magnet the polarized ion current (deuterons) at the ionizer exit was about 10·10−8 A, at the target area (3 cm2) about 2.5·10−8 A. The alignmentP 33=−0.27 was measured for deuterons (110 keV) by the neutron asymmetryA in the H3(d, n)He4 reaction.
The description of the polarization detection will follow in part II.
