An interpretation of the structure of subthreshold fission cross section of240Pu

Abstract

The structure recently observed in the subthreshold fission cross section of240Pu is interpreted as being due to intermediate states of the fissioning nucleus associated with the second minimum of the potential energy as a function of deformation postulated byStrutinsky.
