Summary
With cytokinin test using tobacco pith (Nicotiana tabacum cv.Wisconsin) in the epiparasitic plantMonotropa hypopitys we discovered two cytokinins which influence the growth of mycorrhizal fungi. Similary, cytokinins enhance the growth rate of known mycorrhizal fungi (Boletus edulis, Boletus pinicola, Suillus variegatus andArmillariella mellea). A decade agoBjörkman discovered in waterextract ofMonotropa hypopitys a fungal growth substance. This he named “tuburcin”.
For comparison we cultivated the fungi using medium with KIN. All of four different fungi positively react on KIN in medium. For three of them (B. edulis, B. pinicola andS. variegatus) we found that the optimal concentration of KIN is 10−7 g/ml, while forA. mellea is even 10−6 g/ml KIN suboptimal concentration. The controls showed that the differences in wet weight are much more pronounced than the differences in dry weight. It is not yet known in what way cytokinins exert the controls of water content in mycelial hyphe.
On the basis of the presently available results we may attribute the activity ofBjörkmans “tuburcin” to the presence of cytokinins in crude extracts.
Since cytokinins were found also in the exudate of pine tree roots we think that the same may apply toMelins “M”-factor. This finding supports the hypothesis, that higher plants influence the growth rate of mycelia of mycorrhizal fungi via cytokinins action.
