Summary
A study is given of Sr-90 data of soil and grass of 8 fields in the Netherlands having different contents of exchangeable Ca. These values are compared with the deposition values of Sr-90 found by direct measurement. There is a fairly good agreement. The following equation was worked out in order to calculate the Sr-90/Ca ratio in grass,y, (pc Sr-90/g Ca):
in whichQ is the number of mc Sr-90 per km2,x the exchangeable Cacontent in the soil (106 kg/km2) andv the amount of Sr-90 (mc/km2) deposited in the preceding month. The mean contamination level is fairly well represented by this equation, although there are exceptions. The equation enables to predict a future contamination fairly well. The data would suggest that vertical transport of Sr-90 in Ca-rich soils is more rapid than in Ca-deficient soils.
