Crystal fields in PrB6 and NdB6

Abstract

Inelastic neutron scattering experiments have been performed on the cubic intermetallic compounds PrB6 and NdB6 at different temperatures and with different incident neutron energies. From the measured spectra the crystal field parameters (A 4<r 4>,A 6<r 6>) have been determined to (−205 K, +6 K) and (−185 K, +6.5 K) for PrB6 and NdB6, respectively. TheA 4<r 4> values are consistent with a ΓS ground state and a crystal field splitting of 46.5 meV (540 K) in CeB6 determined in an earlier experiment (A 4<r 4>=−236 K).
