Summary
The recessive nuclear gene striate-2 (sr 2) conditions white striping of the leaves in maize, and expression of the gene is modified by interaction with a second factor near theR (anthocyanin) locus. In striped leaves the plastids of green tissue are normal in appearance, but the mesophyll and bundle sheath plastids of white tissue are reduced in size, irregular in shape, and have characteristically failed to develop internal ribosomes or an organized lamellar system.
