Pathomorphological diagnosis of benign and malignant endocrine tumours

Summary

The morphological diagnosis of endocrine tumours is difficult, especially in regard to their dignity. The otherwise useful histological and cytological signs of malignancy mostly fail in endocrine tumours. Reviewing these problems, the diagnostic criteria and differential diagnosis between hyperplasia, adenoma and carcinoma are discussed in respect to the different endocrine organs, except hypophysis, epiphysis and the thyroid gland. Interdisciplinary cooperation seems necessary. Modern immunhistological methods promise improvement.

Zusammenfassung

Die morphologische Diagnose endokriner Tumoren ist besonders hinsichtlich der Dignitätsbeurteilung oft schwierig. Die sonst meistens verwertbaren histologischen und cytologischen Kriterien der Malignität versagen bei den meisten endokrinen Tumoren. In der vorliegenden übersicht wird die Problematik der unterschiedlichen diagnostischen Kriterien und der Differentialdiagnose zwischen Hyperplasie, Adenom und Carcinom für die verschiedenen endokrinen Organe außer Hypophyse, Epiphyse und Schilddrüse besprochen. Interdisziplinäre Zusammenarbeit ist notwendig, immunhistologische Methoden versprechen Fortschritte.
