Cytomegalovirus antibody assay by platelet aggregation

  • Published:
Archiv für die gesamte Virusforschung Aims and scope Submit manuscript

Summary

The platelet aggregation (PA) and complement fixation (CF) tests were compared as assays for cytomegalovirus antibodies. Sera from normal blood donors and from patients with various infectious diseases, with cytomegalovirus mono-nucleosis and after open-heart surgery were studied. Sera negative in one test were usually negative in the other (85% agreement). Antibody titers in the PA test were up to 10 times higher than those in the CF test. Acute disease caused by cytomegalovirus could be diagnosed as readily by the PA test as by the CF test. The titer of cytomegalovirus antigen was higher in the PA test.
