Summary
The authors describe 11 cases with a clinical picture which is in general reminiscent of herpangina as described byZahorsky. They have usually come sporadically in contrast to earlier described cases of herpangina, which have appeared in small epidemics. Coxsackie virus was demonstrated in 4 out of 11 cases virologically investigated. Virus from 2 of the patients seems to correspond to types A5 and A8 according toDalldorf. Neutralizing antibodies in convalescent serum have been established in all 4 cases. The authors consider it likely that a similar symptom picture may appear in acute infectious diseases without any connection with Coxsackie virus.
One of the cases in which Coxsackie virus was established presented distinct signs of encephalitis. However, the diagnosis of encephalitis was somewhat uncertain owing to an injury of the skull some weeks before the onset of the acute infection. In another case of herpangina, which was positive for Coxsackie virus at the preliminary examination, aseptic meningitis was established.
