Summary
A virus strain has been isolated from 148 pools of 100 individuals each of female Culicidae, mainlyAedes vexans, collected in July and August 1964, in the meadows lining the Danube near Pischamend (about 20 km to the east of Vienna). This Fischamend strain has been identified with fluorescent antibody and with the complement-fixation test as Tahyna virus. In contrast to the prototype (Bardos 92 strain) the Fischamend strain causes a purpura cerebri in suckling mice after intracerebral and subcutaneous inoculation.
