Summary

It is shown that a material whose thermodynamical state is described by internal variables α i which are governed by equations of evolution of the form\(\dot \alpha _i = f_i \left( {u_j ,\alpha _k } \right)\), where theu j represent the “external” variables (deformation, temperature, temperature gradient) possesses the property of fading memory (as postulated byColeman) if thef i are differentiable and if the matrix of their partial derivatives with respect to the α k is negative definite.
