Summary
The selectivity of a spectrophotometric determination of a substance in mixture or under background absorption conditions can be increased by application of orthogonal polynoms describing the absorption spectra of the substance and mixture under investigation. Two methods utilizing the orthogonal polynoms and the problems to be solved by these methods have been considered. In the Daly-Jefimowa-Markowitsch method (DEM) one term of the polynomial equations describing the absorption spectra of the substance and mixture under analysis is used, this term being, as a rule, of the highest order. In Ashton-Tootill method (AT) the same purpose is achieved by using the sum of all the equation terms with exponents higher than that of the polynom describing the background absorption. A mathematical substantiation of the AT method, as well as criteria for assessing the correctness and reproducibility of the analyses by the DEM and AT methods have been proposed. The results of experimental metrological comparison of these methods, with the absorption spectra of some mixtures of antibiotics as an object, are presented. It is demonstrated that the AT method provides in any case more correct and reproducible results, the volume of calculations involved being somewhat greater than in the DEM method.
