Analysis of the variability of unconfined compression tests of rock

Summary

The laboratory testing program reported herein describes the statistical correlations of unconfined compressive strength (σ c ), Young's modulus (E t50), and modulus ratio (MR) to their coefficients of variation (CV(σ c ), CV(E t50), and CV(MR)). Negative correlation of bothσ c andE t50 to CV(σ c ) indicates that data scatter tends to decrease with increasing strength and stiffness. A positive correlation between MR and CV(σ c ) indicates that stiffer rocks are more variable for a given compressive strength.
