Summary
The oncocytes of various organs of man [salivary glands, thyroid (Askanazycells), parathyroid (Welsh-cells)] showed a strong activity of histochemically demonstrable cytochrome oxidase, succinic dehydrogenase, DPN- and TPN-diaphorase. The same was the case with the oncocytes of focal hyperplasia in salivary glands as well as in the tumor cells of two oncocytomas of the thyroid gland (so called Hürthle-cell tumors). The epithelial cells transformed into oncocytes showed regularly a considerably stronger enzymatic activity than the corresponding “normal” cells. It still remains undecided whether this strong activity of oxidative enzymes represents a true increase in function, to be regarded as a functional transformation („Umdifferenzierung“) or only a compensation to cellular damage.
