Summary
The intracellular osmotic pressure of cells had been studied and found to be 0.3 osM (isotonic with blood), and 0.45–0.6 osM (hypertonic with blood). From these values a theory had been developed concerning the specific, active transport of water. Slices of liver were incubated in isotonic and hypertonic media; at various intervals the content of Na, K, and water were measured and correlated. By using sodium azide (1.645×10−4 Mol), the concentrations of electrolytes within the cell were stabilized. From the results it is concluded, that the water was transferred depending upon actively regulated gradients of ions. The concept of concentration gradients of water had to be discarded. Disturbances in the metabolic supply of energy lead to a faulty distribution of ions between the intra- and extracellular spaces. The consequence of this uptake of salt, referred to asdysionia, is an absorption of water, known already by its histologic picture.
