Summary
After addition of Tuberculin GT and autologous plasma, the percentage of lymphoid cell blast forms and their rate of mitosis were determined by tissue culture of the leucocytes of 61 people who gave a positive reaction to the Mantoux Skin Test. In addition, the sera of the same group of people were examined with the Boyden Hemagglutinat Test for the presence of humoral antibodies. People free from tuberculosis as well as those with active (contagious) pulmonary tuberculosis showed only a small percentage of lymphoid cells that had undergone transformation to blast forms and an equally small number of mitotic forms. On the other hand, patients with inactive, healed tuberculous lesions and those with recently acquired extrapulmonary tuberculosis with old, inactive tuberculous lesions of the lung produced a high percentage of lymphoid cell blast forms and a higher rate of mitosis. The percentage of lymphoid blast forms in cultures of the leucocytes of patients with old, active tuberculosis lay somewhat between the described two extremes. No correlation was found between the results of the serological investigation for humoral antibodies against tuberculin and the percentage of lymphoid cells transformed to blast forms nor their rate of mitosis.
