Development of quantitative perimetric tests

Summary

A simple quantitative perimetric test which allows the investigator to differentiate inner retinal from outer retinal, and choroidal involvement at different points of the visual field, has been described. These studies of neural data processing (or interactive properties) are believed to reflect retinal receptive field properties.

When studying receptive field properties in patients with optic nerve and visual pathway lesions, added variables tended to cause artifacts during measurement. Careful investigation of these patients has led to the definition of two time-varying factors, short-term fatigue and/or a saturation-like effect, and alteration in local adaptation. These factors should be studied in depth, particularly when investigating lesions occurring central to the retina. Two very simple tets for the purpose requiring only standard equipment have been described.

Résumé

Un simple test de périmetrie quantitative permet de distinguer à différents points du champ visuel les parties internes de la rétine des parties externes et de la choroïde.

Lorsqu'on soumet des malades atteints de nevrite optique ou d'une lésion des voies optiques à des pareilles mesures, les résultats peuvent être faussés. Ceci est le cas en particulier, lorsqu'il y a fatigue ou saturation rapide ou lorsque l'adaptation locale est modifiée. Ces facteurs doivent être étudiés avec soin, surtout lorsqu'il s'agit de lésions rétro-rétiniennes. Deux tests très simples sont indiqués dans ce but.

Zusammenfassung

Eine einfache Methode erlaubt es bei quantitativer Perimetrie an verschiedenen Punkten des Gesichtsfeldes die inneren Netzhautschichten von den äußeren und der Aderhaut zu unterschieden.

Die Untersuchung von Patienten mit einer Neuritis optica oder einer Störung im Bereich der Sehbahnen kann zu Fehlschlüssen führen. Dies kommt hauptsächlich bei schneller Ermüdbarkeit oder bei Veränderung der lokalen Adaptation vor. Diese Faktoren müssen besonders bei retroretinalen Leiden genauestens untersucht werden. Zu diesem Zweck werden zwei einfache Teste angegeben.
