Summary
Cephalosporium acremonium CW 19 produces cephalosporin C from sulfate; production is increased by addition of methionine, a source of sulfur for the antibiotic. Mutation to methionine auxotrophy eliminates the ability to produce antibiotic at low methionine concentration (30–80 μg DL-methionine per ml) despite normal growth and the presence of excess sulfate for antibiotic synthesis. Thus cephalosporin C biosynthesis from sulfate by the parent culture involves some obligatory role of endogenous methionine, probably a non-precursor role.
