Abstract
It can be shown that 3.3′-dihydroxy-2.2′-bi-1-indenone (1), regarded byMoubasher andIbrahim as the “ninhydrin dye”, is in fact a consecutive product of the latter. The katalytic hydrogenation of 2-nitro-1.3-indandione in ethanol gives 6.12-dioxo-6.12-dihydro-diindeno-pyrazine (3), whereas the hydrolysis of “Ruhemanns purple” (2) in aqueous ammonia yields the isomeric 5.7-dioxo-5.7-dihydro-diindeno-pyrazine (5).
