Abstract
It has been shown previously that the transformation ofl-gulonic acid tol-xylulose in the yeastSchwanniomyces occidentalis, which is capable of growing onmyo-inositol as the only carbon source, is catalyzed by a sequence of two enzymic reactions. In complete analogy to the situation in animal tissue, the first enzyme dehydrogenatesl-gulonic acid to 3-keto-l-gulonic acid1. It has now been possible to establish the existence of the second enzyme which is responsible for the decarboxylation of 3-keto-l-gulonic acid tol-xylulose. This enzyme also is very similar to the corresponding animal enzyme.
