Abstract

Recent developments in the physics of the magnetospheric tail are reviewed. Particular emphasis is placed on progress in selfconsistent theory and on the comparison of its results with the observations. It is demonstrated that several of the macrospcopic properties of the tail can be understood in terms of a rather simple two-dimensional picture in which the plasma is static and isotropic.

Certain stability properties of the tail can be related directly to simple geometric properties of the unperturbed static configuration.

This discussion then leads over to the question to wath extent present stability theory is able to explain the onset of the magnetospheric substorm.

The review finishes with a brief description of the present state of the theory of steady state merging.
