Abstract

Reversible inactivation of nitrate reductase by ammonia in intact cells ofCyanidium caldarium is described. In this organism the phenomenon occurs in the light or in the dark, in contrast with green algae where it is reported that it occurs only in the light and in the presence of CO2.

Inactivation is dependent on temperature. At 42° C it occurs in less than 10 min and at 0° C it is very slight.

In vivo the latent as well as the fully active enzyme exhibit kinetic properties toward heat treatment which are totally different with respect to those previously observedin vitro.
