Die untersuchten Knöllchenbakterien bilden an den verwendeten Pflanzen keine polyploidisierend wirkenden Stoffwechselprodukte, wie sie von anderen Mikroorganismen bekannt sind.

Die Wuchsstoffbildung der Rhizobien scheint mit der Polyploidie des Knöllcheninneren nicht zusammen zu hängen.

Eine Voraussetzung der Knöllchenentstehung ist vielmehr das Bestehen eines Gefälles unterschiedlicher Polyploidiestufen in der Wurzelrinde, wie aus den Colchicinversuchen hervorgeht. Durch Vermehrung der polyploiden Zellen bei bestimmten Colchicinkonzentrationen kann bei diploiden Leguminosen eine Erhöhung der Knöllchenzahlen erreicht werden, ein Kennzeichen dafür, daß die normalerweise geringe Zahl solcher Zellen ein begrenzender Faktor für die Knöllchenentstehung ist. Analoges gilt für tetraploide Leguminosen.
