Summary
The isolation of the protein PP2 from human placentas is described. The placental protein is identified as ferritin; its physico-chemical and immunochemical properties are compared with those of human ferritin and horse ferritin. A modified Laurell-technique was used for the quantitation of ferritin in extracts from human placentas. According to it a single placenta contains an average concentration of at least 18 mg ferritin-protein. With the same method ferritin could be detected in about 50 per cent of the sera from patients suffering from malignant tumors; the concentration of ferritin in these sera ranged from 0.05–0.2 mg per 100 ml.
