Summary
These studies deal with the correlation between the electrical and the mechanical activity of pregnant human uteri during labour. The electrical activity was recorded with bipolar silver-silverchloride electrodes from the abdominal wall, with bipolar intrauterine, extraovular platinum electrodes, whereas the mechanical activity was recorded with a saline filled open-end catheter, in the intrauterine, extraovular space. There is a synchronism between the electrical activity derived with internal and external electrodes. However, in many recordings electrical activity was found to precede mechanical activity and lasts until the uterine contraction has reached its maximum.
The frequent, probably local, non conducted potential fluctuations which are non-synchronous with uterine contractions during the pre-labour period disappear when contractions become more coordinated. At that time no electrical activity is recorded during the intervals between contractions. The electrical activity derived with external electrodes is five times as small in amplitude as that obtained by internal electrodes.
