Abstract
The diffuse interstellar absorption bands at λ4890 and λ6180 are believed to belong to electric quadrupole transitions enforced by the presence of the interstellar magnetic field. Their intensities relative to the bands at λ4430 and λ4760 and their state of polarisation might be used for an investigation of the field.
