Summary
By electron microscopical examination of human hard chancre and syphilitic papulo-pustules the ultrastructural localization of Treponema pallidum in the tissue was revealed:
-
1.
In chancre spirochetes are predominantly localized around the vessel walls and in close vicinity to inflammatory cells.
-
2.
In the primary syphilis intracellular, membrane-bound spirochetes are particularly found within capillary endothelial cells, histiocytes, granulocytes, and less frequently within lymphocytes and plasma cells.
-
3.
At the dermo-epidermal junction of syphilitic papules spirochetes are met inside as well as outside the inflammatory cells.
-
4.
In the epidermis the spirochetes occur between epidermal cells as well as within keratinocytes.
-
5.
The appearance of spirochetes within plasma cells and the morphological features of the endoplasmic reticulum of these cells may suggest a direct antigenspecific stimulation of plasma cells.
