Summary
In 12 conscious men (age 25±4 years) the pressure diameter relationship of the intact femoral artery was studied without and during continuous infusions of noradrenalin (10 and 20 μg/min, respectively).
The arterial diameter was measured non-destructively with an ultrasound reflection method, the arterial pressure was measured directly in the contralateral femoral artery.
During control period (subjects supine, no noradrenaline infusion) the following results were obtained: diastolic diameter 0.74±0.05, pulsatile diameter changes 6.73±0.36%, distensibility (ΔD/ΔP) 0.87×10−6 dyn−1 cm3, and the calculated pulse wave velocity 6.44±0.22 msec−1.
During infusions of noradrenaline (10 μg/min) the diameter decreased by 6.8%, the distensility by 18.5% the changes being statistically significant while the calculated pulse wave velocity increased by 7%.
Compared with the “elastic” common carotid artery in men one finds the “muscular” femoral artery much stiffer, and its reaction to noradrenaline qualitatively different. The significance of the results for the dynamics of the arterial pulse is discussed.
