Abstract
A new compound of lanthanum silicon nitride, LaSi3N5 has been prepared by the reaction between Si3N4 and La2O3 under a 50 atm nitrogen pressure at 2000° C for 2 h. The space group is P212121, Z=4, a=7.838 Å, b=11.236 Å and c=4.807 Å, D c=4.6 g cm−3. The crystal structure data and X-ray powder diffraction data are given. The characteristics of the structure have been noted and the similarities between LaSi3N5 and Si3N4 have been discussed in terms of the fundamental structural unit of SiN4 tetrahedra.
