Problems of chronic manganese poisoning on the basis of investigations of workers at a manganese alloy foundry

Summary

In 46 persons among 119 workers at a foundry producing manganese alloy, manganese levels of over 20 µg% were found in the blood without marked objective symptoms of manganese poisoning. Comparison with a control group showed differences in magnesium and calcium levels, AlAT, AspAT, LDH, LAP activities, albumin, α 1- and Β-globulin, bilirubin, cholesterol levels in serum and hemoglobin and reduced glutathion concentrations in red cells. The group was checked up within one to two years after exposure stopped. Gradually manganese levels became normal, as well as practically all biochemical parameters which had revealed marked deviations from the norm at the time of exposure. Subjective and objective disturbances, however, showed a much slighter tendency to regress. The results of the investigations prove the wisdom of rotating workers in jobs where they are exposed to manganese, and justify extension of medical prophylaxis.
