Summary
The epidermis of six persons (age: 49–81) with senile skin lesions was examined by means of electron microscopy.
Most significant features were irregularity, i.e. focal distribution of the pathological findings and increased variability of the epidermal cells in size and shape. Additionally, the following important alterations could be observed: disturbance of the intercellular adhesion as manifested in a widening of the intercellular spaces; disturbances of the dermo-epidermal junction with duplication of the electron microscopic basal membrane; intracellular vacuolisation of the epidermal cells; profound degenerative changes of melanocytes and irregular distribution of melanin granules.
There are striking similarities between the fine structural alterations of senile epidermiss and the lesions in xeroderma pigmentosum. This may imply that — to a certain extent—similar factors play a part in the pathomechanism of both processes (disturbances of the so-called “dark repair mechanism”?).
„dark repair”-Mechanismus?).
