Summary
The 24 hour rhythm in the mitotic activity of the Ehrlich mouse ascites carcinoma in unoperated mice persists after ovariectomy as well as after adrenalectomy. In the adrenalectomized animals, however, the mitotic activity at the time of the maximum of the rhythm lies significantly above the corresponding values of the control animals. Neither an adrenal cycle, as proposed by Halberg, nor a periodic secretion of the gonads, as suggested by Bullough, comes into question as the cause for the mitotic rhythm of the tumor.
