Summary

In the last decennia the experimental research work on melanoma has been given considerable impetus by the frequence of occurence of spontaneous melanoma in hamsters. The comparative studies show great differences the various types of tumor.

Our own studies deal especially with the transformation of the solid spontaneous hamster melanom M Mel 1 in an ascitic form and with its consequent biological behaviour.

The ascites form permits an exact determination of the LD 50 after intraperitoneal and subcutaneous injection. After intraperitoneal injection using an adequate method, we obtained a regularly reproducible survival time with only small deviation. Knowledge of LD 50 and survival time is the basic condition for the latter therapeutic assays.

The subcutaneous injection is particularly appropriate for the study of the metastazing process, since this survival time by far exceeds the one observed with intraperitoneal injection.
