Summary
For the determination of selenium in non-volatile soluble organic compounds 1–10 μg of the substance are measured by taking an aliquot of a solution of known Se concentration; the substance is burnt in an oxygen flask and the selenium is absorbed in ∼ 0,003 N alkaline solution. Hypophosphoric acid reduces the absorbed selenium to hydrogen selenide, which is titrated bipotentiometrically with a 10−4 M solution of lead acetate. 1 μg of selenium can be determined with a standard deviation of ±18 ng of selenium. Only cations forming sparingly soluble selenides cause interferences.
