The effect of hypothermia on the diuretic action of furosemide in anesthetized rats

Summary

Seventy-six anesthetized Wistar rats were subjected to hypothermia to determine its effect on renal function and on the diuretic action of furosemide. Cooling in an icewater bath to a body temperature of 30° C diminished glomerular filtration rate, total renal plasma flow, urine flow, and renal excretion of potassium and sodium. These parameters were further reduced with cooling to 26° C. Additionally, at this body temperature, blood pressure and the plasma potassium concentration decreased, while the concentration of plasma sodium increased. Fractional tubular sodium and water reabsorption remained constant at all temperatures. At 30° C, the diuretic effect of furoseminde was diminished, and completely eliminated at 26° C. This is thought to be the consequence of the reduced glomerular filtration rates in hypothermia which are further decreased by injections of furosemide.
