Summary
The aminopeptidase test was performed with representatives of gram-negative, gram-positive, and gram-variable bacteria. All gram-negative bacteria tested gave a positive test reaction with L-alanine-4-nitroanilide as test substrate. Representatives of the coryneform bacteria and some streptococci showed aminopeptidase activity after prolonged reaction times. A correlation between aminopeptidase activity and distinct interpeptide bridge composition in the peptidoglycan of many strains was demonstrated. The influence of growth conditions on aminopeptidase activity of intact bacterial cells is shown.
