Summary
In the process of cobalt halide extraction with organic solvents different cobalt compounds are extracted, depending on the solvents and the parameters of the aqueous phases. In some distribution systems several compounds occur simultaneously in the organic phase.
In order to explain this distribution reaction, well-known methods for the estimation of the composition of extracted compounds were used and their suitability was examined carefully. Table 4 gives a summary of the results obtained.
The system cobalt thiocyanate-water-organic solvent, a system of analytical interest, was thoroughly examined. It has been found in case of the well-known photometric method for the estimation of cobalt that this element—after extraction with tributylammonium thiocyanate — exists in butylacetate as tetrathiocyanatocobaltate and not as hexathiocyanato compound. Further, the complex constants of trithiocyanato- and tetrathiocyanatocobaltate in tributyl phosphate, cyclohexanone and isobutylmethyl ketone were calculated by three different methods. The numerical values of these constants gave quantitative confirmation of an earlier observation, that the number of inorganic ligands in highly active solvents is smaller than that in less active ones. That means, for coordinative saturation of the central atom inorganic ligands can be substituted by highly active solvents.
