Summary
A compact machine for smoking cigarettes and cigars has been designed for analyzing heavy metals in the participate and gaseous phase of smokes. A digital controller governs the progress by repeating puffs under predefined conditions. Instead of a piston two magnetic valves with a flask and a vacuum pump are used for generating a puff of a definite volume. The total particulate matter (TPM) is precipitated by means of an electrostatic filter. The gaseous phase is absorbed in diluted perchloric acid. The aim of the concept of the device is to avoid metallic parts wherever possible in order to minimize the risk of contamination; thus, the housing consists of plexiglass and the absorption vessels of PTFE or quartz, respectively.
