Summary
Perfluoroalkanes are the least polar eluents known. The properties of a commercially available perfluoroalkane (Fluorinert FC-78) have been studied and its utility as an eluent in liquid chromatography on silica and on alumina has been verified experimentally. The reproducibility and the optimum conditions for the separation of hydrocarbons (e.g., alkanes, alkenes, phenyl alkanes, etc.) and some chlorinated hydrocarbons are sensitive functions of the water concentration and of the temperature of the eluent. The logarithms of the capacity ratios are a linear function of the carbon number of the alkane chain for a particular homologous series. The possibility of performing group separations with perfluoroalkanes is discussed.
