Summary
Separation of Mo(VI) from aqueous solutions of high acidity is of high technological importance. Solventextraction of molybdenum was studied from aqueous nitric acid (1–10 M) using phosphoric acid di-(2-ethylhexyl) ester (0.1–0.5 M) in kerosene at Mo-concentration levels ranging from 2×10−4 M to 0.2 M. The distribution coefficient of Mo(VI) was determined as a function of temperature and concentration of reagents.
Two different mechanisms of extraction were found to be involved. Neutral addition complexes containing only phosphoric acid ester as a ligand were extracted at moderate concentrations of nitric acid, whereas predominantly solvates were extracted at high acid concentrations.
Phosphoric acid di-(2-ethylhexyl) ester was found to act as a very efficient extradant for the separation of Mo(VI), even from solutions containing high concentrations of mineral acids. Free Gibb's energy of extraction of ionic solvates of Mo was determined as \(\Delta \tilde G\) = - 2.4 kcal/mole. Extraction yield was repressed on addition of sulfuric acid or phosphoric acid tri-n-butyl ester, respectively. Back-extraction of Mo(VI) was obtained using aqueous ammonia (1 M) yielding≳ 90% recovery.
