Summary

A sensitive and specific method for the determination of low levels of tributyltin (TBT) in water and sediments is presented. The procedure is based on the conversion of tributyltin compounds to tributylmethyltin (TBMeT) and analysis using GC with flame photometric detection (GC-FPD) and GC-MS. Detection limits of less than 1 ppt for water and 0.5 ppb for sediment are achieved. River and lake water and lake sediments analysed show tributyltin to be present in the low ppt- and ppb-range, respectively.
