Summary

The effect of propriety disinfectants on the function of the guinea pig cochlea has been investigated by continuous derivation of compound action potentials and cochlear microphonics during and 8 days after intratympanic application.

While ethylalcohol appears to be inappropriate for the treatment of inflammations of the tympanic cavity mucous membranes due to its local ototoxicity, other commonly used chemotherapeutics (boric acid, povidoneiodine, dequaliniumchloride) seem to have no adverse effects on the inner ear.
