Abstract
In view of an analytical application of precipitating main components we have investigated the sorption reactions of many elements upon the silver precipitates AgCl, AgBr, AgI, AgSCN, AgCN, AgBrO3, and AgIO3 under identical conditions. Particularly the rate of sorption during the precipitation reaction was pursued. The reversibility of the sorption reactions and the maximum amount of trace elements, adsorbed by a precipitate under constant conditions were found out. The variety of adsorbed elements and their co-precipitated amounts are listed in tables.
Because of the surface charge of the silver halogenides and silver thiocyanate trace elements are bound as a rule by adsorption; cations by negatively, anions by positively charged precipitates. In general the sorption reaction is reversibel, when the direction of charge is reversed.
It was not yet possible to identify the mechanism of the sorption of elements at AgCN, AgBrO3, and AgIO3. Because of the absence of a measurable surface charge it is evident that “adsorption” in the meaning of Hahn cannot be the cause for the sorption of trace elements by these precipitates. The “logarithmic distribution law” of Doerner and Hoskins (formation of mixed crystals) is realized only in a few cases. It is not possible to interprete the variety of co-precipitated trace elements by employing only the well known precipitation rules of Fajans and Hahn.
