Summary
An analysis of previous illnesses in 829 children with a first attack of pyelonephritis gave the following results:
-
1.
No differences in frequency of previous illnesses were found in infants suffering from pyelonephritis and infants with no renal complaints.
-
2.
During the 8 weeks prior to the onset of the disease children with a primary pyelonephritis suffered from a statistically significantly higher number of previous illnesses than children with a secondary pyelonephritis. This difference was not very obvious in infancy but became more and more obvious with increasing age.
-
3.
The reverse was observed during the period preceding the 8 weeks prior to the onset of the disease. Children with a primary pyelonephritis had fewer previous illnesses than children with a secondary pyelonephritis. The differences were statistically significant.
-
4.
Staphylococcus infections, exogenic injuries (traumas, operations, poisoning), hyperbilirubinemia, inflammations in the region of the external genital organs, protracted disorders of the gastro-intestinal passage, and infections with enteropathogenic E. coli were the diseases found in a statistically higher frequency as previous illnesses in infants with pyelonephritis compared with children without renal complaints.
-
5.
Staphylococcus infections, otitis, pneumonia, non-specific enteritis, and infections with enteropathogenic E. coli were statistically significant more frequent previous illnesses in patient with an unsuccessful primary therapy of a primary pyelonephritis than in patients where the primary therapy had been successful.
