Abstract

Eighty-one children with a diagnosis of minimal brain dysfunction were randomly assigned to receive magnesium pemoline (Cylert), dextroamphetamine or placebo. Parent, teacher and clinician ratings and a battery of psychological tests were measured before treatment and at the end of eight weeks. Significant improvement was found for both active drugs and few differences between drugs were obtained. Side effects were similar for the two drugs and a laboratory battery showed no toxic effects. It is concluded that magnesium pemoline offers a good alternative for treatment of this syndrome.
